Streichquintett E-Dur

The quintet is scored for two violins, viola, and two celli. There are five movements, four of which, with the exception of the Adagio, are of moderate to fast tempi. The style is overtly Romantic with lyrical melodies and a bright tonal palette.

An opening Allegro con brio movement presents two themes, both energetic and fresh, which are then developed to a modest degree. The briefest section is the Andantino second movement which provides a stark transition with a key change to E minor and a gentle counterpoint between the melodic lines. Following is a Scherzo that is reminiscent of Mendelssohn and showcases Smyth’s compositional ability as she balances both treatment of thematic material for each instrument, but also maintaining an overall cohesiveness for the ensemble. The Adagio movement in the key of C# minor is the highlight of the piece with its quiet, introspective melody and reverent mood. The voicing of the plaintive theme shifts from the violins to the viola in this section, and the deeper sonority gives the movement a somber tone, as is fitting in its role as a lament for one departed. The final movement, the Allegro molto, is a sharp contrast to the Adagio, and brings the piece to a stirring close with its faster tempo and shifting dynamic levels.

The quintet itself is an interesting musical portrait of a woman composer who is still learning her craft and beginning to explore her talent for musical composition in a field dominated by men.
