Studien und Materialien zur Musikwissenschaft 101
Gabriele Wietrowetz (1866–1937), a pupil of Joseph Joachim, was one of the best known female violinists of her time. She was the first woman ever to teach violin at the Königliche akademische Hochschule für Musik (now the University of the Arts) in Berlin. As well as touring throughout Europe as a soloist, she founded an all-female string quartet which survived for over a decade. The story of her life and career is a contribution to her rediscovery and to our understanding of the world of a female violinist at the turn of the 20th century.
