Christmas in Dettelbach

Mrs Arens writes in her Foreword: Why “Christmas in Dettelbach”? Since 1989, I’ve had the pleasure of living in an incredible historic house in the old town centre of Dettelbach in Lower Franconia in Germany. Small as it is, Dettelbach – complete with medieval encircling fortified wall, Gothic parish church, late Gothic Town Hall, Pilgrimage church, and many half-timbered houses – has officially been a town since 1484. A very picturesque place! Here are contemporary arrangements of 12 carols, half English, half German.The main challenge here was to make the arrangements as simple, but as lyrical and contemporary as possible, with my piano students in mind, who are generally bored with standard arrangements of all-too-familiar Christmas songs.
