Josephine Lang’s years in Tübingen were initially very happy. From the 1850s onwards, however, she suffered a series of misfortunes. Against this backdrop, she apparently found and sought solace in setting spiritual poems to music. The diversity of the songs is surprising in its range of moods and styles.
