This piece is loosely inspired by the rhythmic character of the Cuban rumba. The typical contrast between percussive instruments and melodic voices is reflected in the piano writing: a pointed, pizzicato-like bass line in the right hand is combined with a tenuto left hand, together with the alto saxophone part.
