This composition was created on March 30, 1878, and made its debut on June 4, 1878, in the Votive Chapel of the New Cathedral in Linz, marking the 25th anniversary of Franz Joseph Rudigier’s tenure as Bishop of Linz.
In this piece, Bruckner skillfully sets the antiphon „Tota pulchra es Maria,“ an ancient Christian prayer, to music.
